So, if your body is hungry for serotonin or ravenous for dopamine, then it’s incredibly easy to get stuck in an addiction cycle that feels unbreakable.

The Sugar Brain Fix breaks through that addiction by slowly incorporating changes.  The staples of the standard American diet that currently feed your stress, anxiety, or burnout responses become once-in-a-while treats (instead of habitual crutches).

… And you finally figure out how you and sugar can be “just friends."

  • Sugar releases serotonin in the brain—the “feel good” biochemical that soothes worries, boosts confidence, and creates a feeling of “okayness” in the world.
  • Bad fats release dopamine in the brain—an energizing biochemical that lifts us up during stressful situations and exciting challenges.
  • An instant hit of either can artificially and temporarily temper all sorts of feelings, like exhaustion, loneliness, sadness, boredom, and uncertainty.

What’s your current relationship status with sugar? If you’re like most, you’re probably thinking “It’s Complicated."

Sugar is like that bad boyfriend or girlfriend your friends keep telling you to leave. Maybe you’ve tried, but it’s just too hard. You still have feelings for sugar. Sugar has always been there for you. Sugar provided comfort when you were blue and rewarded you when you were celebrating.

With a little distance, maybe you could become “just friends” with sugar, but that seems impossible—sugar is everywhere.  Even worse, sugar’s best friends—bad fats—have started to play a major role in your every day life, and it’s impossible to envision your life without them.

There’s a reason sugar and bad fats have such a hold on us.  It’s not about willpower, and it’s not any type of character flaw.  There’s a scientific explanation for why these unhealthy foods are more like an unhealthy relationship than a form of nourishment.

Week 1

  1. Don’t cut any foods out of your normal diet. We add before we take away.
  2. Eat at least seven servings of whole fruits and vegetables. These will ensure you’re getting the vitamins and minerals needed to manufacture serotonin and dopamine while keeping your brain big and beautiful.
  3. Eat at least one omega-3-rich food every day. This will ensure you’re getting more brain-boosting, anti-inflammatory, good fats.
  4. Skip or replace one breakfast or dinner this week. You can either skip the meal altogether or replace it with bone or vegan broth.
  5. Do one fasted-state workout. This is a workout done just before the meal that comes after the one you skipped or replaced. Most people prefer to do cardio in the fasted state, but you can do any type of moderately rigorous exercise for a minimum of 30 minutes.
  6. Add one boosting activity each day. Based on your findings from the quizzes in Part II, you will receive a list of activities that will replenish the neurochemicals you need most. If you need to replenish both serotonin and dopamine, alternate by adding a serotonin booster one day and a dopamine booster the next.
